1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides at 100

1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides were 100 years old on 1st May 2017.    What a fantastic achievement that the Guides in Burley have run for 100 years without a break.    To celebrate, the Guides held an afternoon tea party on Sunday 2nd July at the Scout & Guide HQ, Peel Place, Burley-in-Wharfedale for anyone who had any connection with 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides over the last 100 years.

We had around 130 people who came to visit us & enjoy the afternoon. They looked at displays & memorabilia from the last 100 years. The history of 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides is very rich.   The Guides had several visits in the 1920’s and 30’s from Lady Baden Powell.  She opened the Guides meeting house on Station Road in 1923.  The Guides also had many visits from The Princess Royal, Princess Mary, who was the President of Girl Guides and lived at Harewood House.

The present guides dressed in guide uniforms through the ages and served the delicious afternoon teas.   The most senior past guide attending (Mrs Elsie Walker)  & the youngest present guide (Zoe) cut the cake after “happy birthday” had been sung!    Eight past leaders attended, one coming from Somerset to be with us, and they had a great time reminiscing.   It was a wonderful afternoon for all.
