Burley Explorer Scouts is open to boys and girls aged between 14 and 18 years of age.
After a trial period which will normally include a range of different meetings, we invite young people to be invested by making the Scout Promise.
This is a very special occasion and for that reason we ask the young person to choose the date and place where they want to be invested.
Usually the rest of the Explorer Scouts will be present so this has taken us to some very interesting locations over the past few years.
Here are some examples:
- Suspended from a cliff on the Cow and Calf
- At the bottom of a swimming pool (wearing sub-aqua gear)
- Under the waterfall at West Burton
- Balanced on a stone at Castlerigg Stone Circle
- In the sea at Harlech
- On a (stationary) quad bike
- On a raft of canoes at Keilder
- Inside the main chamber of Gaping Gill
What do Explorer Scouts do?
We meet weekly at the Scout and Guide HQ in Peel Place Burley. Meetings are planned to offer a range of fun, excitement and training in essential skills.
The main purpose of training is to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Silver and Gold level. Participants can be registered with the Award at Silver level from their 15th birthday and Gold from 16.
Help is provided in all sections of the Award which are Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and for Gold, a Residential. In the summer months our programme is geared towards training for practice and then assessed expeditions.
We also have an annual camp in the summer holidays which can be up to one week long. Recent camps have taken us to the NW Coast of England, North Wales and the Lake District. Our camps provide the opportunity to get involved in outdoor activities such as ghyll scrambling, water skiing, climbing mountains, kayaking, mountain biking, wind surfing and sailing. All activities are run by qualified leaders under Scout Association safety rules. Our own leaders are qualified in mountain leadership and mountain biking.
If you think you may like to join us then why not pop down on a Thursday evening (8pm to 9pm) during term time to our HQ at Peel Place and have a word with one of the leaders?
