2018 AGM

The 2018 AGM was held on the 14th June 2018 when it was reported that Burley Scouts and Guides have had a very successful year in terms of the continued strength and success of the Guiding Section and the growth to full strength and increasing success of the Scouting Section.  We continue to face the challenge in the Scouting and Guiding sections of much larger numbers of youngsters who want to join the Group than we can take

The Scouting units reported that although there has been scouting in Burley for over 100 years the group name ‘1st Burley in Wharfedale’ was first registered 60 years ago. We are celebrating our anniversary with a group camp in September and have a commemorative badge for our uniforms this year. Parents are always remarking on the positive impact of scouting. As the group is growing a request for volunteer helpers/leaders was sent to all parents (including the waiting list) and disappointingly there were no responses. Additional help is needed in all sections if we are to continue our fabulous work.

Meanwhile the Guiding units resported that it has been another great year for Girls in Guiding in Burley. We are giving 180 girls the opportunity to socialise, make friends, learn new skills and above all have fun. All Rainbow, Brownie & Guide units continue to be full with long waiting lists. Their adventures have included pyrography (wood burning), the unicorn challenge, aim hi, baking, festivals challenge, & have been on a sensory trail.   In the community they have planted the planters outside the hut and have visited Sun Lane nature reserve and supported the Burley Theatre Group enjoying Wizard of Oz.

All Guiding units have participated in the new hut appeal through community events like Teas on the Green, Bonfire night and coffee mornings ~ probably because they involve cakes!  Many have participated in most of the fundraising events held, plus taken part in the welly boot challenge & build it challenge and selling duck tickets.   23 girls have thought up their own challenges in order to raise money for the new hut and gain the Star fundraiser badge.  It is great we have so much enthusiasm and support for the Hut Appeal.
