
Delicious anticipation filled the air at Saturday’s bonfire in Burley-in-Wharfedale, when a fundraising appeal for a new Scout and Guide hut was launched.
Three thousand people came to relish homemade fare and fireworks at the event organized by the local Scout and Guide Association, which has just received planning permission to build a new HQ at its home on Peel Place
The current 1960s’ building has been condemned as “wholly inadequate” by leaders of the 300 scouts, guides, cubs and brownies Rainbow & Beavers, Rangers & Explorer Scouts who meet there each week.
A lack of space, poor design and minimal facilities have also been blamed for a waiting list of 150 youngsters from Burley and surrounding areas eager to join the movement.
Guide leader Sue Vint explained why it was so important to replace the current building, for which £400,000 must be raised: “We’ve made do for many years with a hut that simply isn’t up to the job. Last night’s event raised around £3,500 for scouts and guide funds
