Burley Guiding joins #PlasticPromise

As part of ‘Future Girl Acts’ week which ran from from September 30 to October 6 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from Burley-in-Wharfedale took part in activities in their meetings to learn about plastic pollution and to encourage others to be more aware of the negative impact of single-use plastic.

The girls have made a #PlasticPromise to reduce single-use plastic. It is the UK’s biggest ever girl-led campaign to tackle plastic pollution. They were encouraged to think about ways in which they can reduce their usage of single-use plastic and encourage others to do the same.

As well as making a #PlasticPromise, the girls took part in a plastic-themed activity during their weekly Girlguiding meeting. They used their creativity to show why protecting the planet matters, taking plastic waste and turning it into sculptures of animals they want to protect from plastic pollution.

Over a number of weeks, the girls collected over 500 pieces of recyclable plastic in order to make the sculptures. The girls created, dolphins, sea turtles, octopuses and jellyfish. The girls also took the time to create a speech-bubble for their sculpture which contained a message about the species they focused on.

The Brownies also had a visit from Charlotte Hawkins, owner of the ‘Waste Not Shop’ in Burley-in-Wharfedale. She spoke to the girls about alternatives to using plastic and brought them all a bamboo straw.

The #PlasticPromise campaign and week of action builds on the launch of Girlguiding’s Future Girl manifesto. 76,000 girls and young women shaped Future Girl by sharing the issues that matter most to them. Taking action to protect the planet is one of their top five issues, with plastic pollution named as one of the biggest threats to their future.

Burley Guiding leaders & 1st Burley Guides were a fantastic help to Sue & Gordon Vint last weekend, who opened their garden to help raise money for the Burley Scout & Guide new Headquarters.  It was a glorious day to stroll round, relax & enjoy afternoon teas by the stream & pond in the garden.

Sue Vint said  “the guides were kept very busy all afternoon selling cakes, plants & crafts.   We were thrilled so many people came to visit & we made a substantial amount for the Scouts & Guides.  Thank you to all who came”.

The Open Garden day raised £1,414 for the new Burley Scout & Guide Group new headquarters.

Retiring and New Wharfedale commissioner

Sue Vint

Leaders from Girlguiding Wharfedale celebrated this week when the County Commissioner came to a social gathering in The Red Lion in Burley to thank retiring girlguiding Wharfedale Division Commissioner Annette Hattersley (Left) for the five years she had served as Division commissioner, and to welcome New Commissioner Sue Vint (Right) who now takes on the role.

Both are long serving leaders in Burley-in-Wharfedale and highly recommend Girlguiding for local girls looking for fun and adventure. The Wharfedale Division covers all guiding from Addingham, Ilkley, Ben Rhydding, Burley & Menston

Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacon

Queens 90th birthday 8

On the evening of 21st April,  Burley Scout & Guide Group celebrated HM The Queen’s 90th birthday in Grange Park.   Over 200 Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Guides, Rangers & Explorers & their leaders paraded from their HQ in Peel Place to the park with all their flags.  A fantastic & colourful sight that many villagers came to watch.

We entertained them all by singing a range of campfire style songs, many of the villagers joining in.  The younger girls and boys also learned to dance round a maypole.   At around 7pm the Colour Party of an Explorer & two Rangers unfurled the Union Jack & everyone sang the National Anthem.   At the same time as the Queen lit a beacon in Windsor, Betty Fisher – a 90 year old resident of Burley, lit our beacon in the park.   It was a lovely sunny evening & a very happy event

Guides go to Kingswood Activity Centre

Kingswood 1st & 2nd Burley Guides

Last weekend 68 guides & 7 leaders from Wharfedale Division went to Kingswood Activity Centre near Barnsley. Guides from Addingham, 2nd Ilkley, 1st & 2nd Burley & Menston all had an amazing time taking part in all the activities that were offered to us.

Kingswood Leap of Faith

We did 3G swing, Jacob’s Ladder, Leap of Faith, Aeroball, Bouldering, Archery, Zip Wire & the muddiest Nightline we have ever seen! We did karaoke & campfire at night. The food was fantastic too! It was a superb weekend & the girls were fully absorbed in all the activities, not a minute was wasted & they “played” really hard. We all came home very tired but also very happy – we had an awesome weekend!
