Ilkley Amateur Operatic Society presents “Seussical”

Tickets on sale for Seussical Now

Ilkley Amateur Operatic Society is presenting “Seussical” at the Kings Hall, Ilkley,  7th to 10th March.  Tickets cost £15 / £13 concessions.   It looks a lively show & some of our youngsters are taking part.

A broadway musical from the year 2000 suitable for all the family with upbeat music, songs and interesting characters. This show is based on the works of Dr Seuss, best known in the UK for its use in reading books for learning, although no appreciation of the books is necessary to watch and enjoy the show.

The story draws primarily on three of Dr Suess’s books; “Horton Hears a Who”, “Horton Hatches and Egg” and “Miss Gertrude McFuzz”. Young JoJo dreams and thinks – helped by the cat in the hat the shows host –  conjuring up Horton the elephant in the Jungle of Nool.  Horton is a caring soul who saves a planet full of tiny people who live on a speck of dust and he also becomes part of an unusual family!

The show invites us to imagine, dream, dare to be different and care for others.

In exchange for a bit of publicity from the Group, they are offering a donation towards the Hut Appeal.

Families buy their tickets on line for the Show www.ilkleyoperatic.co.uk, write BURLHUTFUND in the promo box on the final payment screen.    From this the Operatic Society will give the Hut Appeal £2.50 for every ticket sold on line.   Easy!

Santa’s Sleigh Comes to Burley

Many Thanks from the Burley Scouts and Guides

Were you one of the lucky ones to see Santa on his brightly lit sleigh? Burley in Wharfedale Scouts and Guides have raised a fantastic £1580 towards their fundraising project for a new headquarters when they toured the village with the Santa Sleigh.

The cold weather produced a realistic feel for the leaders, parents and members giving the local residents the opportunity to see Santa. This has become a fantastic tradition and is certainly still very popular with adults and children alike.

Rainbow leader Helen said “It was great to see the happy children waiting up to see Santa. They came out in their PJs to give him their letters, hopefully making their wishes come true.”

The team would like to thank everybody for their generous donations. They also want to let you know they have started phase 1 of their new build and the walls of the new hut are now shoulder height. This collection will be going towards the roofing tiles! They would love to hear from anyone with time and talents to help them with phase 2 – the plastering and fitting out of the building. Please contact Helen Haskins if you are a skilled tradesman or could donate any materials. helenhaskins2013@gmail.com

We would also love to hear from you if you could help with match funding.

New Guinness World Record

BURLEY-in-Wharfedale’s Rebecca Cesar de Sa is celebrating after setting a new Guinness World Record in the London Marathon for fastest runner in film character costume (female).

She ran the marathon as Wonder Woman in a record breaking time of 3:16:19 seconds, knocking nearly half an hour off the former record.

Rebecca has raised over £2,350 for the young people of Burley in Wharfedale. The village has been fundraising since 2014 to build a new headquarters to replace the existing dilapidated building. Burley provides Scout and Guide activity for 300 young people per week.

Helen Haskins, of the Burley Scout and Guide HQ fundraising appeal, praised Rebecca’s fabulous achievement. She said: “The Burley Scouts and Guides wish to congratulate and thank Rebecca. The new facilities will enable us increase the opportunity for more young people to have access to fun and life skills. We are now half way towards our target of £400,000, but are always looking for more support and volunteers. More information is available from our website www.burleyscoutsandguides.org.uk or please get in touch with Helen at helehaskins2013@gmail.com”

Leeds Half Marathon – New HQ Fundraising

THE countdown is on to this Sunday’s Plusnet Leeds Half Marathon – one of Yorkshire’s biggest and oldest charity road races.
Burley-in-Wharfedale Scout and Guide Group treasurer Mike Harrison, will take part in the race as he nears his goal of running 1,000 kilometres to raise money for a new scout and guide hut. The group’s appeal has already raised about £200,000 towards a £400,000 target and Mr Harrison, who started his challenge last August, hopes his efforts will boost the total by at least £1,500. He said: “I have run the Leeds Half Marathon before. There’s always a great atmosphere and people cheer you all the way round.”Read more at: http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/our-city/west-yorkshire-and-the-dales/countdown-is-on-to-plusnet-leeds-half-marathon-1-8532895
