EFFORTS to raise £400,000 for the new Burley Scout and Guide headquarters are being stepped up since the proposed building gained planning permission from Bradford Council

The next task for Burley Scouts and Guides will be to raise the £400,000 needed for the modern headquarters. Guides put in their own effort on Saturday, raising hundreds of pounds by packing bags for supermarket shoppers.

Members of Burley Scout and Guide Group gathered at Morrisons supermarket in Guiseley for the event, raising more than £700 in the process.

Guide leader, Sue Vint, said: “We’ve been having lots of small events raising funds during the past six months, but we haven’t had a big launch yet.”

Leaders would like to thank Morrisons for its support. More details can be read here

TWO groups of Scouts from Addingham and Burley-in-Wharfedale are a step closer to achieving their goal of visiting the International Scout Centre in Switzerland in 2016 thanks to a donation from property firm Dacre Son & Hartley.

In total there will be 35 Scouts aged between 11 and 14, attending a ‘mini World Jamboree’. To make sure the trip was affordable to all the groups have been fundraising and looking for sponsorship

Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland is the World Centre of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. The Centre began in 1923 with Lord Baden-Powell, who, after the first World Scout Jamboree, had a dream about a place where all Scouts from all over the world could meet: the Permanent Mini Jamboree

Once there, the scouts will take part in lots of activities, including tobogganing, mountaineering in the Alps and visiting a glacier. They will also learn about the locality and the customs and cultures of the other young people from the other nations attending the camp. International friendship is a key aspect of visiting the centre.

Contact Paul Jennings on 01943 831156 or e-mail basekandersteg2016@gmail.com for more information about how to support the groups with their trip.

A FANCY dress party was held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of the 1st Burley Rainbows and the 1st anniversary of 3rd Burley Rainbows.

Rainbows is the section of the Girlguiding movement for five to seven-year-olds. More than 30 Rainbows attended the party, many dressed as little Anas and Elsas, from the Disney film, Frozen, at the Scout and Guide Hut on Peel Place. They enjoyed games and activities organised by the young leaders and a party tea. There were also two birthday cakes, one lit by 25 candles and the other by a single candle.
