Co-op Local Community Fund

Our Scout & Guide Group were chosen again to be part of the Co-op local community project in Burley-in-Wharfedale, which ran until October 2019.    The Co-op Local Community Fund helps pay for local projects that Co-op members care about. Every time Co-op members shop at the Co-op, 1% of what they spend on selected own-branded products and services goes to help fund community projects in our area.  The Co-op also give all money raised from shopping bag sales to our causes, to help even more

Two years ago we were lucky to have this opportunity & after a year we were presented with £1850!    This year we were given a cheque for £3090!!

Many thanks to all residents who took out a Co-op card to help us with our donations – and thanks in particular to the Co-op for supporting us in this way

New defibrillator for the Scout and Guide Headquarters

Thanks to the White Rose Lodge of Mark Master Masons, Burley-in-Wharfedale now has two defibrillators for the use of the community. The new defibrillator is positioned outside the new Scout and Guide Headquarters at Peel Place.

The headquarters manager, Howard Thompson, who is also a member of the Lodge, secured the funding from the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust, Mark Masons of West Yorkshire.

He said: “We are very fortunate to have this additional defibrillator for the village of Burley-in-Wharfedale, many thanks to the Lodge for funding this.”

Pictured at the presentation of the defibrillator on Saturday, September 28, by the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust Mark Masons of West Yorkshire to the Burley-in-Wharfedale Scout and Guide Headquarters are, left to right: Angela Hewett, Burley Group Scout leader, Mike Wild, chairman of Burley-in-Wharfedale Parish Council, Jim Stanley, chairman of the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust, Sue Vint, Wharfedale Division Commissioner plus Burley Group Guide leader, Byran Collins, group executive chairman (recently retired) and Howard Thompson, Burley Scout and Guide headquarters manager.

2019 Annual General Meeting

The Burley-in-Wharfedale Scouts and Guides Annual General Meeting was held in the new HQ on the 19th September

2019 has been another very busy, high-achieving, year for the whole Group – with all our units full, many training courses completed, awards won, the recruitment of a few very welcome new assistant leaders and helpers and all this against the background of a major project.

Congratulations and thanks go to the youngsters in the units and the adults involved in leading them for such achievement, despite some unavoidable interruptions.  Thanks also go to parents and guardians for their co-operation during this challenging year, especially regarding getting youngsters safely to and from the former hut and recently the new HQ.

Although at this AGM we rightly focus on what has been achieved in the units – the details of which will follow in the next reports – the new HQ will provide us with excellent facilities for this generation of scouts & guides and for many generations to come.  It will also be a valuable community facility.  Thanks to members of the project group and the fundraising team for their determined and successful work and all those leaders, parents and supporters who have contributed.  In addition, thanks are also extended the lay members of the Group Executive who, alongside leaders, have given so much of their time and expertise to running the overall operation of the Group.

We look forward as a Group to being able to enrol more members from the waiting lists and to being able to run our training programmes and special events more easily and effectively.  However, that is completely dependent on recruiting and training more leaders, assistant leaders and helpers. We need more people to come forward or we won’t be able to respond to demand. We particularly and urgently need more leaders for the Scout troop as a consequence of Roger’s well-earned retirement.

2018 AGM

The 2018 AGM was held on the 14th June 2018 when it was reported that Burley Scouts and Guides have had a very successful year in terms of the continued strength and success of the Guiding Section and the growth to full strength and increasing success of the Scouting Section.  We continue to face the challenge in the Scouting and Guiding sections of much larger numbers of youngsters who want to join the Group than we can take

The Scouting units reported that although there has been scouting in Burley for over 100 years the group name ‘1st Burley in Wharfedale’ was first registered 60 years ago. We are celebrating our anniversary with a group camp in September and have a commemorative badge for our uniforms this year. Parents are always remarking on the positive impact of scouting. As the group is growing a request for volunteer helpers/leaders was sent to all parents (including the waiting list) and disappointingly there were no responses. Additional help is needed in all sections if we are to continue our fabulous work.

Meanwhile the Guiding units resported that it has been another great year for Girls in Guiding in Burley. We are giving 180 girls the opportunity to socialise, make friends, learn new skills and above all have fun. All Rainbow, Brownie & Guide units continue to be full with long waiting lists. Their adventures have included pyrography (wood burning), the unicorn challenge, aim hi, baking, festivals challenge, & have been on a sensory trail.   In the community they have planted the planters outside the hut and have visited Sun Lane nature reserve and supported the Burley Theatre Group enjoying Wizard of Oz.

All Guiding units have participated in the new hut appeal through community events like Teas on the Green, Bonfire night and coffee mornings ~ probably because they involve cakes!  Many have participated in most of the fundraising events held, plus taken part in the welly boot challenge & build it challenge and selling duck tickets.   23 girls have thought up their own challenges in order to raise money for the new hut and gain the Star fundraiser badge.  It is great we have so much enthusiasm and support for the Hut Appeal.

2017 AGM

The Burley Scout & Guide Group AGM was held on 15th June 2017 at the Scout & Guide Hut

The highlights of the AGM included

  • Guiding has just celebrated 100 years in the village and we should recognise the tremendous record of unbroken leadership that represents
  • Scouting has been re-developing strongly under some new leadership roles. We now have two Scout troops which are growing rapidly towards capacity and we’ve recently added a second Beaver unit.
  • All those connected with the New HQ Project have worked very hard and all the preliminary work has been completed, with full construction drawings now in place. Fundraising has been very hard – mainly because we are not in an area that readily attracts the support of significant donor trusts, companies and other organisations, yet we have raised over £200,000 and are within sight of being able to commence the build.

2016 AGM

On the 16th June the Annual General Meeting was held of what was technically the first year of the Joint Scout & Guide Group.

The meeting heard about another very active and successful year, with much progress through the training programmes in all units, combined with a huge range of activities through which members have gained experience, learned skills, worked and played together, served the local community and had fun.
