Daniel Rodley, Contingent Leader, said: “The children were so excited to be given this chance to go along to the airport and do something completely different to raise money for what is going to be a truly memorable trip.

“Three of the Scouts have learning or physical disabilities so we require two full time carers to support them. We wanted to secure funding to make the trip affordable for everyone so it’s great that Jet2.com has given us this further fundraising opportunity.

Scouts get a boost from Round Table for Switzerland trip

Funding provided by Ilkley and District Round Table is helping Burley and Addingham Scouts towards their fundraising goal for their Swiss Experience in 2016.

In July, 35 young people aged ten to 14, from Burley-in-Wharfedale and Addingham will be travelling to the International Scout Centre in Kandersteg, Switzerland. During the trip they have a whole host of exciting and adventurous activities planned, including tobogganing, alpine mountaineering, ice climbing and learning survival skills.

As well as the physical activities, the group hopes to build friendships with Scouts from all over the world, giving the young people the opportunity to learn about other customs and cultures and to benefit from the fellowship of people their own age from other countries.

The Scouts need about £9,000 for the trip, and in addition to the £1,600 donation from the Round Table, have raised thousands of pounds themselves.

Of the 35 young people attending the trip, three members of the group have disabilities and learning difficulties, two of which will require full time carers to enable them to go on the trip. Mr Jennings added: “The money received from Ilkley and District Round Table, by paying for the two full time carers, will enable our three young people with additional needs to attend the camp. We cannot overstress the benefit to the lives of these three young people in enabling them to take part in our adventure.”

Bonfire night lights the appeal for a new scout and guide HQ

Brownies Bonfire

Delicious anticipation filled the air at Saturday’s bonfire in Burley-in-Wharfedale, when a fundraising appeal for a new Scout and Guide hut was launched.

Three thousand people came to relish homemade fare and fireworks at the event organized by the local Scout and Guide Association, which has just received planning permission to build a new HQ at its home on Peel Place

The current 1960s’ building has been condemned as “wholly inadequate” by leaders of the 300 scouts, guides, cubs and brownies Rainbow & Beavers, Rangers & Explorer Scouts who meet there each week.

A lack of space, poor design and minimal facilities have also been blamed for a waiting list of 150 youngsters from Burley and surrounding areas eager to join the movement.

Guide leader Sue Vint explained why it was so important to replace the current building, for which £400,000 must be raised: “We’ve made do for many years with a hut that simply isn’t up to the job. Last night’s event raised around £3,500 for scouts and guide funds

TWO groups of Scouts from Addingham and Burley-in-Wharfedale are a step closer to achieving their goal of visiting the International Scout Centre in Switzerland in 2016 thanks to a donation from property firm Dacre Son & Hartley.

In total there will be 35 Scouts aged between 11 and 14, attending a ‘mini World Jamboree’. To make sure the trip was affordable to all the groups have been fundraising and looking for sponsorship

Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland is the World Centre of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. The Centre began in 1923 with Lord Baden-Powell, who, after the first World Scout Jamboree, had a dream about a place where all Scouts from all over the world could meet: the Permanent Mini Jamboree

Once there, the scouts will take part in lots of activities, including tobogganing, mountaineering in the Alps and visiting a glacier. They will also learn about the locality and the customs and cultures of the other young people from the other nations attending the camp. International friendship is a key aspect of visiting the centre.
