New HQ fund bags £2,000 from Tesco’s community grant scheme

Burley-in-Wharefdale Scouts and Guides is delighted to announce it has bagged £2,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme.

Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £40 million to over 9,700 local community projects.

Millions of shoppers have voted in Tesco stores up and down the country and it can now be revealed Burley-in-Wharefdale Scouts and Guides has been awarded £2,000

Alec Brown, Tesco’s Head of Community, said:“Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”

Voting ran in stores throughout September and October with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout.

Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions are awarded funding.

Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down the UK to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to be able to be a part of the journey and provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.”

Santa’s Sleigh Comes to Burley

Many Thanks from the Burley Scouts and Guides

Were you one of the lucky ones to see Santa on his brightly lit sleigh? Burley in Wharfedale Scouts and Guides have raised a fantastic £1580 towards their fundraising project for a new headquarters when they toured the village with the Santa Sleigh.

The cold weather produced a realistic feel for the leaders, parents and members giving the local residents the opportunity to see Santa. This has become a fantastic tradition and is certainly still very popular with adults and children alike.

Rainbow leader Helen said “It was great to see the happy children waiting up to see Santa. They came out in their PJs to give him their letters, hopefully making their wishes come true.”

The team would like to thank everybody for their generous donations. They also want to let you know they have started phase 1 of their new build and the walls of the new hut are now shoulder height. This collection will be going towards the roofing tiles! They would love to hear from anyone with time and talents to help them with phase 2 – the plastering and fitting out of the building. Please contact Helen Haskins if you are a skilled tradesman or could donate any materials. helenhaskins2013@gmail.com

We would also love to hear from you if you could help with match funding.

Aviva Community Fund -2017

The Aviva Community Fund will finance 500 projects throughout the UK, and if this project gets enough votes  it will be in with a chance of receiving funding.

All voters have to do is to create an account and register their 10 votes. The system prompts you to enter your e-mail address and then sends you a link (to make sure you’re not a robot!). Here’s the project link to the Aviva site

Voting closes on 21st Nov, so if you have time while you’re on line the Scouts and Guides would appreciate your vote.

Feel free to share on e-mail or facebook if you know others who might be willing to vote

2017 AGM

The Burley Scout & Guide Group AGM was held on 15th June 2017 at the Scout & Guide Hut

The highlights of the AGM included

  • Guiding has just celebrated 100 years in the village and we should recognise the tremendous record of unbroken leadership that represents
  • Scouting has been re-developing strongly under some new leadership roles. We now have two Scout troops which are growing rapidly towards capacity and we’ve recently added a second Beaver unit.
  • All those connected with the New HQ Project have worked very hard and all the preliminary work has been completed, with full construction drawings now in place. Fundraising has been very hard – mainly because we are not in an area that readily attracts the support of significant donor trusts, companies and other organisations, yet we have raised over £200,000 and are within sight of being able to commence the build.
