2018 AGM

The 2018 AGM was held on the 14th June 2018 when it was reported that Burley Scouts and Guides have had a very successful year in terms of the continued strength and success of the Guiding Section and the growth to full strength and increasing success of the Scouting Section.  We continue to face the challenge in the Scouting and Guiding sections of much larger numbers of youngsters who want to join the Group than we can take

The Scouting units reported that although there has been scouting in Burley for over 100 years the group name ‘1st Burley in Wharfedale’ was first registered 60 years ago. We are celebrating our anniversary with a group camp in September and have a commemorative badge for our uniforms this year. Parents are always remarking on the positive impact of scouting. As the group is growing a request for volunteer helpers/leaders was sent to all parents (including the waiting list) and disappointingly there were no responses. Additional help is needed in all sections if we are to continue our fabulous work.

Meanwhile the Guiding units resported that it has been another great year for Girls in Guiding in Burley. We are giving 180 girls the opportunity to socialise, make friends, learn new skills and above all have fun. All Rainbow, Brownie & Guide units continue to be full with long waiting lists. Their adventures have included pyrography (wood burning), the unicorn challenge, aim hi, baking, festivals challenge, & have been on a sensory trail.   In the community they have planted the planters outside the hut and have visited Sun Lane nature reserve and supported the Burley Theatre Group enjoying Wizard of Oz.

All Guiding units have participated in the new hut appeal through community events like Teas on the Green, Bonfire night and coffee mornings ~ probably because they involve cakes!  Many have participated in most of the fundraising events held, plus taken part in the welly boot challenge & build it challenge and selling duck tickets.   23 girls have thought up their own challenges in order to raise money for the new hut and gain the Star fundraiser badge.  It is great we have so much enthusiasm and support for the Hut Appeal.

Burley Brownies Bookmark Project

THE girls of 1st Burley Brownies wrote to their favourite authors, illustrators, actors and presenters earlier this year asking them to take part in the Bookmark Project. With the help of their leaders they have been asking celebrities to create unique bookmarks for their auction which raises money for Katiyo Primary School in Zimbabwe which is a school the Brownies have supported for the past 17 years.

The Bookmark Project auction is an annual auction full of one off, unique bookmarks designed, doodled or created by authors, illustrators, actors and other celebrities. All the money raised by the auction once fees have been paid goes to support Kaityo Primary School in the Honde Valley in Zimbabwe.

Their celebrity doodlers include Emma Thompson, Julia Donaldson, Sir Patrick Stewart, Dawn French, Brian May, Sandi Toksvig, Jemma Redgrave, Prime Minister Theresa May, M.G. Leonard and Tony Ross along with a number of other very talented authors, illustrators, actors and presenters.

The auction ran from May 9 to May 27 and raised £3,103.

Burley Explorers declared the smartest in the Otley Torch Race

Burley Explorers joined scouts from across Wharfedale who completed this year’s annual Torch Race up Otley Chevin.

The Torch Race is a fell race run in a relay from Otley town centre to the top of the Chevin and is competed for by Scouts and Explorers across Wharfedale. The winning team is the first team to ‘break’ the flag at the top.

All sections are inspected in uniform with The Burley Explorers and 1st Ben Rhydding Scout Troop being declared the joint smartest

The Torch Race was first held in 1935 as part of the celebrations of the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary. It was carried on that occasion by the Scouts of Otley from the Jubilee Clock in Otley to the summit of the Chevin. It was then used to light the Beacon on the Surprise View, which was one of a chain throughout Britain to celebrate the Jubilee.

After the 1935 celebrations, the torch was presented to the Scouts of Otley, and in May each subsequent year, the Scouts have arranged to hold a relay from the town centre to a flagpole placed on the site of the original beacon

3,500 Ducks Compete in the Annual Burley-in-Wharfedale Duck Race

IT’S almost time for the annual Burley-in-Wharfedale Duck Race.

It has become such a popular event that an extra 500 ducks have been purchased for this annual village fundraiser on Sunday, June 10.

The race, which sees hundreds of yellow plastic ducks released into the River Wharfe to race downstream on the current to the finish line, will raise money for Burley Community Trust and the Burley Scouts and Guides new headquarters appeal.

Burley-in-Wharfedale Community Trust chairman, Duncan Ault, said: “We’ve recruited another 500 ducks, so we’ll have a record 3,500 ducks competing to win! The ducks are so popular, they recently had an outing to Bradford City park where they took part in a big fundraiser on Yorkshire Day to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.’’

Brownies Walk for Water

Some of 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Brownies and their families took part in a Walk for Water with WaterAid this weekend to highlight the problems that millions of people across the world have in accessing clean water.

WaterAid figures reveal 844 million people do not have access to clean water close to their homes and 2.3 million people don’t have access to a decent toilet of their own.

Sharon Hatterley, leader of 1st Burley Brownies said: “The girls visited watery locations in the village and walked to the River Wharfe to collect water which they they carried back to the village, experiencing the hard work undertaken by many children around the world each day. They were very grateful that their water is clean and comes from the tap, and quite shocked that many people would have to drink river water”

“Around 443 million school days are lost each year because of water related illness. The girls will be making a donation to WaterAid.”
